Southern Management Association (SMA) 2018 Pre-Doctoral Consortium

SMA’s Pre-Doctoral consortium will be held at Hilton Lexington (Downtown) in Lexington, Kentucky on Wednesday November 7, 2018 as part of the Annual Meeting of the Southern Management Association. Consortium participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend the remainder of the SMA Annual Meeting, which runs from November 6 – 10, 2018.

The Pre-Doctoral consortium is a program designed to help those who are committed to, or are seriously considering, earning a doctoral degree in management or a related field.  The goals of the Consortium include: (1) helping students to gain a better understanding of key factors to consider in applying to doctoral programs, and (2) to provide students with a “realistic preview” of life as a doctoral student and faculty member. The consortium will feature nationally recognized scholars who will lead panel sessions and round table discussions on such topics as “How to decide which programs are right for me,” “The ins and outs of grad school applications,” and “Life as a doctoral student and beyond.”

In addition, opportunities for networking with current doctoral students, faculty, and PhD program directors are built into the program. SMA will provide breakfast and lunch on the day of the consortium as well. To provide more encouragement, SMA is awarding $500 stipends to help with travel expenses[1]

The deadline for consortium application is AUGUST 21st, 2018. To apply, students will need to join the Southern Management Association (SMA), fill the application form below, and upload the following documents:

(1)   a Letter of Application that includes a personal statement detailing interest and experience,

(2)   a current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume,

(3)   a copy of their driver’s license or other government photo ID that verifies that the applicant will have attained the age of 21 on or before November 6, 2018,

(4)   Contact details of a Faculty reference and Letter of Recommendation from a member of their (current or former) faculty. (the recommendation letter can be sent either from the applicant with the letter of application or separately emailed by the faculty member to the Coordinator of the Pre-Doctoral Consortium, also due by the August 21 deadline). System-generated email prompt soliciting this letter will not be sent to the Faculty.

If you have questions about the application process, please contact Dr. Kulraj Singh (Mississippi State University), Pre-Doctoral Consortium Coordinator at

[1] Stipends are awarded competitively to up to 20 participants; a limited number of additional seats for non-funded participants may be available. Participants must attend the entire one-day consortium program in order to receive their funding.
