TRAVEL INFORMATION

Billed as “the heart of the Virginia Waterfront: a vibrant port city,” Norfolk boasts the northern end of the Intracoastal Waterway and sits approximately 25 minutes (19 miles) from the Virginia Beach oceanfront. It is serviced by Norfolk International Airport (ORF) with over 200 daily flights by Allegiant, American, Delta, Southwest, and United, and there is an Amtrak train station in the downtown area. The airport is about 15 minutes (10 miles) from the conference hotel.

Norfolk Hilton The Main is located on the Elizabeth River and its river walk, near attractions such as Waterside Market, Nauticus, the USS Wisconsin, the World Trade Center, the MacArthur Mall, and others. The river walk provides social (games area – giant Jenga, etc.) space, including outdoor bar and restaurant venues; it also connects from the Waterside Market (restaurant and entertainment venue) to Nauticus and other attractions. Nearby ‘maker space’ will be of interest to entrepreneurship scholars.

Multiple restaurants at various price points are located within a block or two of the hotels; this includes a food court in the MacArthur Mall, coffee shops, as well as locally owned quick-service options (e.g., large slice of pizza for $3; $3 tacos, etc.), and 5-star establishments. A short three-minute walk from either property gets you to the Norfolk light rail, which goes down Granby street all the way to the Virginia Beach city line, offering easy access to dining, drinking and shopping options. Norfolk also runs an on-demand FRED system; this is an extended golf cart – “Free Ride Every Day” in the convention area. At night, the area is well lit and safe. This is an E-map of the area: http://www.themainnorfolk.com/map

Approximately 85% of nearby eating establishments have agreed to recognize conference badges and provide various discounts and special offers. Thanks to our friends at VisitNorfolk

Off Site Excursions

Naval Station Norfolk Tour and Talk, Wednesday, October 9, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Take a guided tour of Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval installation in the world. Home port to 59 ships, ranging in size from aircraft carriers to submarines, 18 aircraft squadrons and headquarters of the Atlantic Fleet, this naval complex occupies over 8,000 acres of land and is home to more than 70,000 military personnel. Navy personnel will take you past the 14 piers, through the Naval Air Station, and the historic homes built for the 1907 Jamestown Exposition on “Admiral’s Row,” which now house the flag officers. Following the tour, you will have the unique opportunity to hear from one of the leaders of the base, who will share first-hand details on managing and leading the world’s largest naval base. Note: Due to the timing of this event, students participating in one of the consortia will not be able to attend.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Oyster Experience, Wednesday, October 9, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Visit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, where you will tour the Brock Environmental Center, one of the world’s greenest living buildings. Take an in-depth look at the first commercial building in the U.S. to capture and treat rainwater for drinking (and take a taste of the water!). Then, learn about the magical world of the oyster, one of the Chesapeake Bay’s most important natural filters, as you build an oyster cage that will be suspended in local waters. You will play a crucial role in providing a habitat for aquatic life, and will also have the opportunity to sample an oyster! Note: Due to the timing of this event, students participating in one of the consortia will not be able to attend.

Walking Tour of Norfolk’s NEON District, Saturday, October 12, 9:30 am – 11:30 am: Join a local guide for a walking tour of Norfolk’s creative arts district, known as NEON (New Energy of Norfolk). Explore the vibrant murals and sculptures that pepper the streets and buildings of the neighborhood, learn about its history, and discuss the fascinating intersection of private property, ownership, artists, and the organizations steering the curation of public art in the NEON. Total distance walked will be about 2 miles. A refreshment stop will be included in the tour.

Second Annual Southern Scramble Golf Event – Wednesday, October 9, 8am
Would you like another networking opportunity to meet other SMA members? If so, think about playing in SMA’s Second Annual SOUTHERN SCRAMBLE golf event. The event is geared toward allowing members to play golf in a scramble (some say best ball) format where foursomes compete against each other for a prize. The SOUTHERN SCRAMBLE will take place at 8am on October 9th (Wed) at the Cypress Point Country Club about 15 minutes from the conference hotel. If you don’t play golf often or play poorly (like Jon and Russell), don’t worry. We don’t expect it to be really competitive… just FUN… LIKE SMA! If you don’t know anyone else who plays, don’t worry. That will allow us to pair you up and allow you to meet other SMA members. The cost is $60 per person. Rental clubs will be available as well. There are a very limited number of rental sets, so those people who have a need for rentals should contact us quickly. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Jon Carr (jccarr@ncsu.edu) or Russell Crook (trc@utk.edu).

Information About Norfolk from A Local

As you know, the best thing about SMA is that people who associate with it. Well, one of great members, Andrew Bennett, a local in the Norfolk area, took the time to prepare a guide to the Norfolk area to share with people attending the meeting.
